If you’re tried and loney

වැහි වළාවන්                                හැංගිලා

පරිසරයමයම ගිනි මැලයක්             වෙලා

මද පවනත්                                   හැංගිලා

ගින්දර  මෙ පළාතම හොරකමි        කරලා

 

ගස් වැල් දුක්                                 වෙලා

අතන මෙතන ගොලු                     වෙලා

දුවිල්ලත් වැහි                             වැහැලා

ගින්දර  මෙ පළාතම හොරකමි      කරලා

ගංගා වල වතුර                          හැංගිලා

මුඵ ගමම මළ ගෙයක්                  වෙලා

මහා පොළවම                           ඉරිතලා

       The Caterpillar

        

                                                                      One a chubby caterpillar

                                                       Sat upon a left

                         Singing eat, eat and be merry
                                              Life is brief

            

                      Soon he lost his appetite

And change its merry tune

  He started spinning and hid him self

                                          Inside a hard cocoon

And he was still and quiet there

                Day after day went by

                At last it cracked and emerged

                A gorgeous butterfly

He spread his brown and crimson wings

And warmed them in the sun

And sang “Now must see the world

My life has just begun”

  Wimalaratne Kumaragama is a prominent Sri Lankan poet, of the Colombo era. A Divisional Revenue Officer by profession, his poems were centred round Wanni,and the people of Wanni.
